GENOCIDE PREVENTION
One Million Bones supports the Genocide Intervention Network's efforts to push Congress and the Administration to implement the recommendations of the Genocide Prevention Task Force (GPTF) report. The recommendations include requiring the Administration to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent genocide, instituting a mechanism for reporting on the status of escalating conflicts, and authorizing funding for genocide-prevention activities.
The GPTF released its final report, Preventing Genocide: A Blueprint for U.S. Policymakers, on December 8, 2008, making the case for why genocide and mass atrocities threaten core American values and national interests, and how the U.S. government can prevent these crimes in the future. The Task Force, co-chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, was convened by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the United States Institute of Peace and the American Academy of Diplomacy.
Congress and Genocide Prevention
On August 5, 2010 Senators Feingold and Collins introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 71 in support of genocide and mass atrocity prevention. The resolution recognizes “the United States national interest in helping to prevent and mitigate acts of genocide and other mass atrocities against civilians, and supporting and encouraging efforts to develop a whole of government approach to prevent and mitigate such acts.” To learn more about the resolution, download GI Network's one-page document (PDF).
